Évian Accords

Évian Accords
   The Évian Accords (Accords d'Évian) were signed on March 18, 1962, by the representatives of the provisional government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA) and those of the French government. The Évian Accords recognized Algerian independence linked to a cease-fire in Algeria (March 19) and specified the conditions for a referendum on self-determination, which took place on July 1, 1962. Meanwhile, there was put in place a provisional Algerian executive committee (nine Algerians, the majority to be from the FLN [Front de libération national], and three Frenchmen). The French population of Algeria demonstrated its resistance to the agreement by conducting a two-day general strike (in Algiers and Oran) and by a demonstration that ended with a tragic fusillade on the rue d'Isly in Algiers in which 25 were killed.
